|Although Massimiliano Allegri was pleased to see Juventus book their place in the Coppa Italia final, but was anything but thrilled by how it was achieved.
The Old Lady let a three goal first leg advantage slip away against Inter on Wednesday, forcing the tie to penalties before Leonardo Bonucci fired home the decisive spot kick.
Allegri admits his side were nowhere to be found during the first 70 minutes of the contest, and hopes the result will teach them a lesson when it comes to playing in cup competitions.
“Our goal was to play well but we made things difficult on ourselves,” he told the assembled press after the match. “We started to create chances after the 70th minute and could have even ended the contest.
“We made some mistakes and were unlucky in some instances, but this match should teach us that cup ties are never over. Sacrifice is needed in order to achieve results.
“We were awful for 70 minutes but we should be happy because the side has qualified for the final of a tournament.”
Allegri believes that starting several youngsters from the opening whistle resulted in a sluggish approach from his side.
“It shows that playing too many youngsters at one time can complicate things,” he stated. “We were the cause of our own problems.
“We struggled as soon as the match started, and as I already mentioned, we only started to play after 70 minutes.”
Although Bayern Munich fell to defeat in Bundesliga action on Wednesday, the Italian isn’t putting any importance on the result as there is still some time before their second leg Champions League clash on March 17.
“We still have time until our match with Bayern,” Allegri said. “As for tonight, we only showed up in the final minutes against a quality side like Inter.”
