|Six matches involving Bianconeri players so far at Euro 2016. Six victories to show for them all.
On Monday, Alvaro Morata’s Spain and an Italy team, for which Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci, Stefano Sturaro and Simone Zaza were all called up, were the latest to add to the perfect string of results attained earlier by Juventus players representing France (Paul Pogba and Patrice Evra), Switzerland (Stephan Lichtsteiner), Croatia (Mario Mandzukic) and Germany (Sami Khedira).
Kicking off proceedings in the afternoon, Morata led La Furia Roja’s line for 62 minutes against Czech Republic, who made life tough for the European champions until Gerard Pique’s 87th-minute headed winner.
The result puts Spain level with Mandzukic’s Croatia on three points at the top of Group D. The two Juventus strikers will face one another in the final group match on Tuesday 21 June.
Meanwhile in Group E, the Bianconeri’s crack defensive unit of Buffon, Chiellini, Barzagli and Bonucci played the entirety of Italy’s 2-0 victory over Belgium, in which they restricted their star-studded opponents to scarcely any goalscoring opportunities en route to the clean sheet.
Bonucci it was who played the pinpoint lofted through ball into the feet of former Juventus man Emanuele Giaccherini for the Azzurri’s first goal in the 32nd minute and Antonio Conte’s charges would continue to put on an impressive showing of heroic defending and overall organisation to contain Belgium before delivering the final blow in the third minute of injury time courtesy of Graziano Pellé’s volley.
With that victory, Italy take pole position of Group E as the only side to sit on three points, with Sweden and Republic of Ireland behind them with a point apiece and Belgium taking up the rear with two group games remaining for each team.
