Former Juventus coach Marcello Lippi believes that Paul Pogba will play a key role in leading a new-look side this season.

The Bianconeri have undergone a squad overhaul throughout the summer transfer window, which saw the likes of Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo depart while Mario Mandzukic and Sami Khedira both made their way to the club.

And the 67-year-old coach insists that the host summer departures does not equate to a weaker team, and believes that the side’s clear philosophy still makes them favourites for a fifth Serie A title.

“Paul Pogba will be the new leader of Juve and he deserves the number 10 jersey,” he told Tuttosport.

“A different team does not mean it is not as strong: with clear ideas and the correct reinforcements, Juventus are still favorites.”

When questioned about Pirlo’s departure, Lippi claimed that Marchisio would undoubtedly step up to the void left behind by the midfield legend and laid his downs his predictions for the new season.

“The absence of Pirlo? Marchisio is a champion. I also hope that Del Piero to come home,” he continued.

“Roma have approached as challengers, Inter still needs time and Fiorentina intrigues me. AC Milan has done well in the market and could be tough to beat.”
