|With the end of Buffon’s career less than 2 years away, Juventus are evaluating long term options for their goalkeeping role.
Gianluigi Buffon, who’s been at Juve for over 15 years, made his retirement date known when he said he would quit after the 2018 World Cup.
It’s a rare move to announce a retirement date so far out in advance, but it does give the club the opportunity to work to find the proper replacement.
There are several links to Gianluigi Donnarumma, who seems to be their heir-apparent for the Italian national team, but there’s also Alex Meret of Udinese.
Meret is currently plying his trade with SPAL in Serie B and has made a handful of appearances this season. The 19-year-old keeper was called up by Antonio Conte in May for the training camp prior to Euro 2016.
According to Eurosport, Juve are a step away from signing Meret after finding an agreement with Udinese. The two clubs have done lots of business in the past.
The young Friulian keeper could be the heir to Buffon. In the eyes of Beppe Marotta, this is a deal he cannot afford to mess up. Replacing Buffon will be one of the biggest challenges for the new player and staff as it will be shoes that are nearly impossible to fill.
